Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland

The Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), made an announcement at the Fisheries Marine Institute of Memorial University on July 10, 2014 on the investment in new initiatives which will support key growth industries.

Through an investment of more than $463,000 from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the Marine Institute (MI) will be able to significantly improve its capacity to provide emergency response training to the province's natural resource sectors.

The investment supports a new Mobile Live Fire Training Unit, based at MI's Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT) Centre in Stephenville, which will provide training to workers in industrial sectors such as mining and oil and gas for situations that reflect real life emergency scenarios. In addition, MI's Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC) will design a new command and control helideck simulator to ehance the institute's ability to provide critical emergency preparedness training to industry that is not currently offered in the province.
