Newfound Resources Ltd. dedicates room on new vessel to Marine Institute
Monday, February 6, 2017

Newfound Resources Ltd. has dedicated a room aboard its newly christened offshore shrimp trawler, the MV Newfoundland Victor, to the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland.

The space will be available to the Institute, year round for research and training purposes. This includes accommodations for cadets completing work terms as well as graduate students and researchers within MI’s School of Fisheries, specifically at the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR) and Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research (CFER).

“Newfound Resources Ltd. has always been a good partner and good friend to the Institute,” said Glenn Blackwood, vice president, Memorial University (Marine Institute). “The MV Newfoundland Victor is an incredible vessel and is state of the art from the Bridge to the processing factory. Both Captains and the majority of the crew are alumni of the Fisheries and Marine Institute and we congratulate everyone at Newfound Resources Ltd. on their accomplishment. The Marine Institute room provides many opportunities to work together and we look forward to building on our shared commitment to learning, exploration and the strengthening of our fishing industries.”

The focus of MI’s research onboard the MV Newfoundland Victor will complement the vessel’s primary purpose – fishing.  However, it also offers an opportunity for other oceanographic research.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the Institute and the School of Fisheries,” said Carey Bonnell, head of MI’s School of Fisheries. “I want to thank Newfound Resources Ltd. for their continued support as we work together to provide new and unique opportunities for our cadets, graduate students and researchers to further their studies.”

"We are proud to provide an opportunity for young Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to obtain not only important year round access to at-sea training but also to provide a platform for applied research to support the excellent scientific work already being conducted by students and research scientists at the Marine Institute," said Brian McNamara, President of Newfound Resources Ltd.

The MV Newfoundland Victor was officially christened on February 4, 2017. The vessel is a tribute to Private Victor Carew, a fallen member of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment who gave his life during the Battle of Cambrai in the First World War.

Newfound Resources Limited (NRL) was founded in 1986 by 25 Newfoundland seafood companies to harvest and deliver large quantities of groundfish for the benefit of Newfoundland factories. Following the demise of the Canadian ground fish stocks, NRL received an offshore shrimp license in 1991 and transformed into one of Canada’s largest shrimp companies. The MV Newfoundland Victor will complement that company’s flagship vessel, the MV Newfound Pioneer.
