Painting for a Cause
Friday, June 30, 2017

Family and friends of the MI Surging Waves traded in their paddles for paint brushes last night, as they gathered in support of the Avalon Dragons, an association of breast cancer survivors, their friends, families, and others who share the goal of supporting dragon boating for breast cancer survivors.

The MI Surging Waves is a team of Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) faculty and staff who fundraise all year in support of the Avalon Dragons and train to take part in the organization’s signature event, Paddle in Paradise.

Last night, 58 participants, many current employees and retirees of the Institute gathered in the cafeteria to show their support. With the guidance of a local artist, each created a calming, sunset image and helped raise more than $800 for a great cause.

The 7th annual Paddle in Paradise is taking place on August 19, 2017.  This year, 36 corporate and community teams will take part in the day of racing. Prizes are awarded to the fastest team, the most spirited group and both the team and the individual with the highest pledge total. With food vendors and activities for the kids, there is fun for the whole family.

Funds raised help the Avalon Dragons provide dragon boating activities for breast cancer survivors. The team also supports programs and services that directly help those affected by Breast Cancer.
