Wednesday, November 20, 2019

More than 100 students and mentors from elementary, junior high and high schools around the province will race boats they’ve designed and built in the eighth annual Model Boat Race taking place in the Marine Institute’s flume tank on Saturday, Nov. 23.Model Boat Race 2019

This year’s race takes place from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Marine Institute’s Ridge Road campus in St. John’s. Media are welcome to attend.

The students will compete using remote-controlled miniature vessels of their own design and construction.

In past races, teams have persevered through sputtering propulsion systems, collisions and capsizing to navigate their boats through a slalom course of buoys and race head-to-head for the title of fastest boat.

Ten teams will participate from eight schools: Ascension Collegiate, Brookside Intermediate, Clarenville High, Crescent Collegiate, Holy Trinity High, Lewisporte Collegiate, Riverside Elementary and St. Mark’s School.

The Model Boat Race is co-ordinated by the School of Maritime Studies and the Office of Student Recruitment.

This year’s event is supported by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and Genoa Design International.
