MI virtually tests new Marine Atlantic ferry design
Thursday, August 26, 2021

In the midst of the last COVID lockdown in the St. John’s area earlier this year, a team at the Marine Institute’s Centre for Marine Simulation stayed safe and busy conducting a series of virtual sea trials on a model of the next Marine Atlantic ferry.MI CMS-ferry modelling

The Centre for Marine Simulation (CMS) was hired by Stena to demonstrate the manoeuvring characteristics of its proposed vessel design for the new ferry. The design required simulated trials in rough weather, ice conditions and tight quarters, including the narrow channel leading to the Port aux Basque ferry terminal.

“It was a challenging project that we put together in a very strange time,” said Maria Halfyard, CMS manager of applied research and industrial projects.
