As Memorial University’s annual Research Week approaches, we are excited to share the outstanding research being conducted by our Marine Institute researchers and graduate students in the oceans industries.

From new innovations in seafood processing to new approaches to ocean safety training to our latest at-sea voyage, we invite you to discover the latest happenings in these dynamic fields.  We’ll also open the doors to how the academic and health sectors can secure their networks against cyberattacks.

Please join our daily in-person or virtual sessions we will be hosting Nov 21-25.

• On Monday, Nov 21,  1-2:15 pm, join the Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development for the first in an exciting three-part webinar series, continuing on Nov. 23 and 25, as its experts discuss new innovations in seafood for the blue economy. Other sessions are taking place on Nov. 23 and Nov. 25 with CASD’s Peter Brown and Dr. Deepika Dave. Each session will include a 30-minute presentation followed by a Q&A session/panel discussion.
• Also on Nov. 21 at 2:15 pm,  Rylan Command, a research assistant in the Marine Institute’s 4D Oceans Lab, will explain how they incorporate environmental DNA for improved benthic habitat mapping.
• On Tuesday, Nov 22, 2pm, spend some time with Caroline Lee, a graduate of MI’s Master of Applied Ocean Technology (MAOT) program. She’ll share her research and findings on the use of remote multi-criteria methods for assessing slope failure potential in the Bay of Islands, Western Newfoundland, using multibeam bathymetry and analog side-scan sonar data.
• Learn about the Marine Institute’s multidisciplinary approach to Ocean Safety Research with Drs. Liz Sanli, Jennifer Smith and Rosemary Ricciardelli, faculty at the School of Maritime Studies on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 12-1pm.
• On Thursday, Nov. 24 at 12 pm, Angela McAllister, a cyber security professional, who has been working in the field of cyber security for 15 years, will share her work with the academic and health sectors to help secure their networks. This presentation will discuss the results of an environmental scan of current cybersecurity programs as well as surveys of academic and industry professionals. The results of the study can help Canadian post-secondary institutions develop a workforce that is skilled and innovative in the field of cyber security.
• To wrap up the week, come to sea with us on Nov. 25, 10 am to learn about the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research‘s at sea survey onboard the Patrick and William during Fall 2022.  A group of scientists, students and staff spent over a month at sea in three marine conservation areas: NE NL Slope, Hopedale Saddle and Funk Island Deep to gather data to be used in helping establish a long term monitoring program for marine conservation areas, in collaboration with Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
