Preparing for bad weather - put personal safety first
Monday, September 10, 2012

With Hurricane Leslie approaching Newfoundland tonight, it's important  to ensure each of us think about personal safety and being prepared.  Thinking ahead of any weather-related emergency, and putting personal  safety at the top of the priority list is something everyone should do. The Marine Institute's Emergency Management website has a  lot of useful information.

How will I know if classes are cancelled or the university is closed? The Marine Institute and Memorial University is ready with a detailed response plan to inform people about emergency cancellations or closures and safety drives the decision on closures.

Once that decision is made, there are number of ways the information is shared with the community quickly as possible.

Here's how you can keep informed:

  • On Twitter: @marineinstitute
  • On Facebook  Official Marine Institute Students Page
  • Newsline emails to your mi.mun.ca account.  To subscribe, email help@mun.ca
  • Urgent Message Tab on www.mi.mun.ca at top of home page
  • Cancellations tab on www.mun.ca
  • Tune in to local radio stations
  • Check BB Announce and Student Announce
  • Video monitors in the Main lobby, west entrance lobby, 1st floor near cafeteria, and 3rd floor near staircase

When closures happen midway through the day, a message is sent around campus as quickly as possible by public announcement system, emailed to employees via the Newsline email service, posted to BB announce and Student announce and posted to www.mi.mun.website, as well as the university website, www.mun.ca.

The same notice is posted to the Marine Institute website, posted through Twitter (@marineinstitute) and posted to the Institute's video screens. Information is also relayed to provincial media who are extremely co-operative in airing the news as soon as possible.

Early closings during daytime will be announced at least one hour in advance. Advisories for late openings and all-day closures will be issued by 7 a.m. For more information on the university's emergency closing procedures, including what radio stations to listen to, visit www.mun.ca/main/closures.php.
