Mission
The Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (CASD) and its team of experts’ act as a catalyst for innovation by bringing science and technology to the seafood processing, marine bioprocessing and aquaculture industries. Our multi-disciplinary team prides itself on creating value, developing solutions, and discovering new opportunities for the Centre’s industry partners thereby enabling them to compete globally in the blue bio-economy.
Mandate
Marine value chain optimization and value maximization are at the core of the Centre’s mandate. Our research focus includes aquaculture and aquaculture engineering, advanced seafood processing technologies such as thermal processing and High Pressure Processing (HPP), equipment design & prototyping, enzymatic extraction of marine biomolecules, and marine by-product utilization using green technologies.
CASD employs 12 research and technical personnel including research scientists, seafood technologists, aquaculture technologists, lab technologists, mechanical engineers, thermal processing specialists, and biotechnologists. The Centre also has a small graduate student program in Marine Bioprocessing where students can pursue thesis based MSc or PhD degrees through the Marine Institute’s Fisheries Science and Technology program under the supervision of Dr. Deepika Dave and/or Dr. Heather Burke.

Goals and Objectives
We work closely with our industry partners to enhance the global competitiveness and sustainability of our seafood and aquaculture industries in Newfoundland and Labrador, and Atlantic Canada.
Enable our industry partners to produce premium sustainable seafood products using innovative green technologies.
Train HQPs and provide them with the skills to be the driving force of Canada’s blue economy in NL and Atlantic Canada.
