Living in NL - Stephenville

MI's Stephenville location is set on Newfoundland's beautiful west coast.

Safety programs like fire rescue are centered here at the Safety and Emergency Response Training Centre (SERT). From Stephenville, you can tour the world-renowned Gros Morne National park and enjoy an array of other outdoor activities.

How to Apply for On Campus Accommodations

You will need to have received provisional acceptance and have activated your MUN login credentials to access the portal.

If you intend to stay in residence you should:

  1. Apply to The Marine Institute
  2. Submit any required documentation
  3. Receive your admission decision email
  4. Activate your MUN login
  5. Complete your student residence application using your MUN login
  6. Receive your time slot for room selection
  7. Select your building and room at the assigned time

The Semester Application Fee for each semester is $40 and is non-refundable.

During your allocated time slot period, you can login to select your room and pay the $500 confirmation fee that will be credited toward your residence fees.

First year students are guaranteed a room in residence.

Living off campus is also affordable and comfortable. Memorial's off campus housing office can help set you up in a place to call home.

As an ideal location in which to live, work, play and study, St. John’s offers a small town feel with a flourishing recreational, cultural and entertainment scene. There is no shortage of adventures and places to experience.

From live concerts and festivals, fashionable shopping districts to our colourful downtown scene, there is something for everyone. Check out a wide array of activities happening around the province and the city.

Student Services

MI’s campus is not just a place where you attend class. It’s a community where we believe in providing a well-balanced experience for each and every one of our students.

From academic to career advising to recreation and student events, our Academic and Student Affairs department has the people and support services to help you achieve personal and professional success while you attend the Marine Institute.

Student Union

The Marine Institute Student’s Union (MISU) is run by students, for students. It provides numerous services including health and dental plans, student discount cards, faxing service, peer tutoring, club and society support, and a student planner/handbook.

Library

Our Dr. C.R. Barrett Library is a unique resource, housing one of Canada's largest marine related collections with up to 60,000 items in its holdings.

Our library features:

  • The Information Commons - Located just inside the entrance our library, our student computer centre is not just comfortable, it's state of the art
  • Study area overlooking the city
  • Study carrels and rooms
  • Wireless access
  • Expert staff ready to help at a moment's notice

You’ll also have access to resources and services of other Memorial University libraries including the Queen Elizabeth II, recognized as being among the best in the country.

Recreation and Fitness

While studying at the Marine Institute, be sure to take advantage of our large, well-equipped gymnasium. It includes exercise rooms, a weight room, and is equipped with change and shower rooms. You may also want to take advantage of a variety of intramural and recreational programs in softball, floor hockey, basketball and volleyball. Individual and group bookings for recreational activities may be made through the Recreation Director's office, Room E2054.

As a Marine Institute student, you’ll also have access to the largest recreation facility in the province. The Works offers Newfoundland and Labrador’s most comprehensive recreation package, and manages a full range of facilities:

  • Cardio centre, workout loft and stretching area - student only areas

The Aquarena Aquatic and Fitness Facility

  • Strength and conditioning fitness centre
  • Outdoor sports fields

Classrooms

They go from cozy seminar rooms set up to seat a dozen people around a table to lecture theatres with big screens for audio-visual presentations. In between, you will find various sizes of traditional and hi-tech rooms, labs and lecture theatres.

Our Smart Classrooms are high-tech. Fully equipped with computers, Internet access, audio systems, projectors and screens to bring learning to a new level of interactiveness. Here your instructors use PowerPoint and the web to illustrate ideas and concepts to their students.
