6.0 Examinations
 
6.1 Scheduling Of Final Examination

 

 1.   Final examinations, if any, shall normally be held in each course at the end of the semester or session during which it was given in accordance with the schedule of examinations published by the MI Registrar’s Office. Students registered in the Technical Certificate in Fire Rescue should refer to the Fire Rescue Academic Diary.

 

2.   If a student is scheduled to write more than two examinations in the same day, they may apply for a deferred exam as described in Procedures for Applying to Write Deferred Final Examinations.

 

3.   Instructors shall not be permitted to give tests or quizzes worth more than 10% of the total final mark in the two-week period prior to the start of semester examinations. As well no previously unassigned work may be assigned in the last two weeks of the semester. This regulation does not apply to:

 

  • Courses with no final semester examination.
  • Laboratory examinations.
  • Assignments given prior to this period which are due in the two weeks prior to examinations.
  • Courses offered in the Technical Session.

 

 
6.2 Procedures For Applying To Write Deferred Final Examinations

 

1.   A student who is prevented from writing a final examination by acceptable cause may apply, with supporting documents, to have the final examination deferred.

 

2.   Deferred examinations will normally be written in the second week of the semester immediately following the one in which the course was offered according to the schedule of examinations published by the MI Registrar’s Office. The period will coincide with the scheduling of Supplementary and Challenge Examinations.

 

3.   In extenuating circumstances students may appeal to have a deferred examination written outside of the schedule for deferred examinations as set by the MI Registrar’s Office, but in no case shall the deferred examination be written any later than the end of the semester immediately following the one in which the student was originally registered for the course. For further information refer to Appeals Policy and Procedures.

 

4.   For a student who is prevented from writing a final examination as described under Scheduling of Final Examinations, the application to defer this examination should be made to the MI Registrar’s office using the Application for Deferred Examinations. It should be submitted as soon as possible after the release of the final examination schedule, and in any case no later than two weeks before the end of the semester or session.

 

5.   A student who is scheduled to write three final examinations which begin and end within a twenty-four-hour period may request to write a deferred examination. Normally, only the second examination in the twenty-four-hour period may be deferred. The application to defer the examination should be made using Application for Deferred Examinations. It should be submitted as soon as possible after the release of the final examination schedule, and in any case no later than two weeks before the end classes in that semester.

 

6.   For a student who is prevented from writing a final examination by illness, bereavement or other acceptable cause, duly authenticated in writing, the application to defer this examination should be made using Application for Deferred Examinations. This application should be made in advance of the examination wherever possible, but no later than 48 hours after the original date of the examination. The following supporting documentation is required:

 

  • For illness or medical conditions, medical documentation from a health professional is required.
  • For bereavement or other acceptable cause, official documents or letters that support the reason for the request (e.g. death certificate, letter from employer, etc.) are required.

 

7.   The decision regarding the request of the student to have the final examination deferred, including information on the appeals route open to the student in the case of a negative decision, must be communicated in writing to the student by the MI Registrar’s Office before the release of final grades in the semester in which the course is taken. For further information refer to Appeals Policy and Procedures.

 

8.   An interim grade of DEF will be assigned by the Registrar’s Office in the case of a student granted a deferred examination. This grade will be replaced by the final grade after the supplementary and deferred examination period as specified in the Academic Diary, and the Registrar’s Office has processed the grade.

 

 
6.3 Final Examination Script

 

1.   A student has a right to see their final examination script. However, the script is the property of the Marine Institute and the Institute retains full possession and control of the script at all times. This regulation upholds the authority and judgment of the examiner in evaluation.

 

2.  To access a final examination script, a student must make a written request to the Head of the School of their program. This request is subject to the following conditions:

 

  • Any such requests must be made following release of examination results for the semester or session in which the course was taken and within one month of the official release of grades by the Marine Institute.
  • The final examination script must be viewed in the presence of a person delegated by the Head of the School.
  • The final examination script must not be taken away or tampered with in anyway.

 

3.  All final examination scripts shall be retained by the Registrar's Office for a minimum of one academic year.

 

 
6.4 Examination Re-Reads

 

1.   Any student may apply to have a final examination re-read, regardless of the grade received.

 

2.   A student is strongly encouraged to request access to the final examination script prior to submitting a request to have the final examination re-read.

 

3.   Except in cases involving an appeal as described below, the application must be made in writing to the MI Registrar’s Office, at MIRegistrar@mi.mun.ca within one month after the student has been officially informed of the result of the examination(s).

 

4.   If the student has submitted an appeal concerning continuance in a program, or to qualify to write a supplementary exam, and the decision is dependent on the results of an examination re-read, the Application for Re-read must be made no later than the end of the second day of classes in the semester following the one in which the examination was written.

 

5.   The appropriate fee must accompany the application. If the final numeric grade increases by at least 5%, then the fee is refunded. If the final numeric grade increases by less than 5% or is unchanged or lowered, then the fee is forfeited.

 

6.   If the student’s grade is changed as the result of a reread, the revised grade will replace the original result on the student’s record and will be denoted on the transcript except in the case where the original grade was a passing grade and a re-read results in a failing grade. In such instances, the original grade will remain on the student’s record.

 

 
6.5 Supplementary Examinations Regulations

 

Marine Institute Supplementary Examination Regulations apply to students in Advanced Diploma, Diploma of Technology, Technician Diploma, and Technical Certificate programs as outlined in the procedure below.

 

1.   Supplementary examinations will normally be written in the second week of the semester immediately following the one in which the course was failed according to the schedule of examinations published by the MI Registrar’s Office. This period will coincide with the scheduling of deferred and challenge examinations, except as noted below for students in the Fire Rescue program.

 

2.   In the case of students registered in the Technical Certificate in Fire Rescue program, supplementary examinations will be written within 5 days of the release of final grades.

 

3.   In extenuating circumstances students may appeal to have a supplementary examination written outside of the schedule for supplementary examinations as set by the MI Registrar’s Office, but in no case shall the supplementary examination be written any later than the end of the semester immediately following the one in which the student was originally registered for the course. For further information refer to Appeals Policy and Procedures.

 

4.   A supplementary examination cannot be written for a course in which a student has received a reduction of any portion of the course grade in which they have been found to have committed an academic offence.

 

5.   Applications to write a Supplementary Examination must be received no later the end of the second day of classes in the semester following the one in which the original exam was written, except as noted below.

 

6.   In the case of students registered in the Technical Certificate in Fire Rescue program, applications to write supplementary exam must be received within 48 hours of the release of final grades.

 

7.   The writing of supplementary examinations is limited to courses having a final exam that constitutes at least 30% of the final course grade, and to students who: 

 

  • have obtained at least 80% of the specified passing grade in courses failed, AND 
  • have satisfied term evaluation requirements as specified in course outlines

 

8.   Except for the Technical Certificate in Fire Rescue, the maximum number of supplementary examinations that may be written throughout a program is shown in the table below. In exceptional cases, additional supplementary examinations may be permitted at the discretion of the School Head. In no case will an additional supplementary exam be approved for a course for which a supplementary exam has already been written.

9.   Due to the sequential nature of the Technical Certificate in Fire Rescue program, students registered in that program may write one supplementary examination per course.

 

10.   A student may write only one supplementary examination for any one registration in a course. If the supplementary examination results in a failing grade the course must be repeated to gain credit.

 

11.   Supplementary examinations will be of similar length and degree of difficulty as the original final examination.

 

12.   The maximum grade for a course in which a supplementary examination has been written is the passing grade for the course.

 

13.   A fee to cover administrative costs will be automatically charged to the student’s account for each supplementary examination written.

 

14.   For the purposes of calculating a student’s revised final grade, the grade obtained in a supplementary examination replaces the grade earned for the original examination for the calculation of the final course grade.

 

15.   Successful completion of a course as a result of a supplementary examination will be noted on the student’s academic transcript.

 

 
6.6 Challenge Examinations

 

A Challenge Examination is written by a student who wishes to seek credit in a course by a procedure other than normal class instruction or transfer of course credit from another post-secondary institution.

 

1.   Students who wish to request a challenge examination may do so by completing an Application for a Challenge Examination, in accordance with the regulations in Section 5.0 Credit Transfer/Credit Awarded through Challenge Examinations of the Marine Institute Academic Calendar.

 

2.   Applications to write a challenge examination must be received no later the end of the second day of classes in the semester in which the course to be challenged is offered.

 

3.   Challenge examinations will normally be written in the second week of the semester in which the course being challenged is offered according to the schedule of examinations published by the Marine Institute Registrar’s Office. This period will coincide with the scheduling of Deferred and Supplementary examinations.
